Volunteering and Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

Nearly one in five Californians live in poverty, and over 30% of people would be unable to pay for basic expenses if they experienced a sudden job loss or medical emergency. To support these most vulnerable populations, the IRS runs the Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to do free tax preparation. Every tax season thousands of VITA volunteers across the United States and California prepare taxes for low-income families making no more than $54,000 per year.  VITA volunteers help families in need qualify for tax refunds that support them throughout the year. In 2017, volunteers:

  • Helped people receive a total of $853,524 in tax refunds
  • Prepared 895 tax returns
  • Earned an average of $954 per tax return
  • Helped families obtain $129,227 in tax refunds to support their children
